Garage Door Painting Services

Timber Garage Doors

Timber garage doors — side-hinged or up-and-over — need thorough preparation to produce a finish that holds. We strip back to sound timber, fill any cracks or splits along the grain, and apply an oil-based or specialist exterior timber primer before finish coats.

The period properties near Wokingham town centre and in Twyford’s village core sometimes have original timber garage doors with significant paint build-up. Painting over that build-up without stripping transfers the same surface failures to the new coat within a season. Two full coats of exterior gloss or satin are standard — with correct preparation a timber garage door finish should hold for five to eight years.

Metal and Steel Doors

Metal garage doors deteriorate through rust, and rust left untreated at the painting stage bleeds through any finish applied over it. The 1960s and 1970s metal up-and-over doors common across Winnersh and Emmbrook estates often have surface corrosion at the panel edges and bottom rail.

We wire-brush loose scale, apply rust converter to active areas, and prime with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any topcoat. Bubbling and lifting on an older metal door is almost always a sign that the previous coat went on over untreated rust. Once the primer has cured, we apply a durable exterior metal finish in the chosen colour.

GRP and Composite Doors

GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the material in most composite garage doors installed on Arborfield’s newer estates and the more recent Winnersh developments. It is non-porous and smooth — a standard primer applied directly to GRP will not bond and the finish will peel.

We use specialist adhesion primers formulated for composite surfaces, which create the key the topcoat needs to grip. Any exterior finish colour can be applied once the adhesion primer is in place. Colour updates on GRP doors are straightforward when the primer stage is done correctly.

uPVC Doors

uPVC garage doors can be painted with good durability, but only when a specialist plastic primer is used. Standard primers do not adhere to the smooth uPVC surface and will lift within months. We use dedicated plastic primer systems that create the adhesion layer for the finish coat.

A correctly primed and painted uPVC door holds its finish for five to eight years. Colour choices include standard white and cream through to contemporary anthracite grey or black — common requests where homeowners want the garage door to coordinate with recently updated window frames or front doors.

Combining with an Exterior Repaint

Garage doors are frequently done as part of a wider exterior repaint. Working on both at the same time means one visit and a consistent finish across the whole front elevation.

See our exterior painting page for full details on exterior repaints across Wokingham. For other exterior timber surfaces, see our wood painting page.

How Garage Door Painting Works

1. Assessment

We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.

2. Surface Preparation

Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.

3. Priming

Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.

4. Finish Coats

Two finish coats are standard for garage doors. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.

5. Final Check

We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

Garage Door Painting Costs in Wokingham

Prices vary with door size, material, and the condition of the existing coating. We provide a fixed price after assessing the door.

Typical Price Range

Most garage doors fall between £180 and £450. Doors in poor condition — heavy rust, peeling in multiple layers, or significant wood rot — require more preparation time and fall toward the higher end.

  • Timber up-and-over or side-hinged door (sound condition): £180–280
  • Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
  • GRP or composite door: £200–320
  • uPVC door: £180–280
  • Double garage door (any material): Add 50–80% to the above
